Phonic & How it helps?

Aug 20

Phonics is a tool that helps children to read by using a particular system. Instead of having to do a memorization of words, they learn the sounds that the letters make. This is a much better option for many children especially the ones that have reading disabilities.

It must be noted that there are approximately one million words in the English language. As such it would be rather difficult for a lot of children to memorize each word. On the other hand, phonics only requires the child to learn forty four phonemes or sounds. This is a task that most children will be able to do. Eventually they will get to a point where they can recognize individual words.

Recognizing Your Child’s Reading Problem

Aug 13

Reading is a very important thing especially in the life of a child. They first learn to read and then use this skill to be able to do more things when they get to school. In retrospect if a child shows a lack of interest in reading then parents tend to get concerned about how the child will is performing. This is a valid concern as children today have to deal with a lot of competition and just may not be able to keep up with it all. Reading problems tend to be the main concern with many parents.

Having an understanding of these reading problems and taking the steps to correct them as early as possible is necessary as it will make them grow disinterested in studying, perform poorly and lose self confidence.

The question can then be posed of what exactly can cause reading difficulties in children and how can they be fixed.

The first problem a child can have is poor vision. It is not a lack of reading material that is a problem and the parents take time out to read with their children and realize that the child is having issues. The best thing to do is to get their vision checked. It may be that they be seeing jumbled words or cannot see the smaller words. This would make any child frustrated. The doctor will be able to properly diagnose the problem and get it corrected.

The next problem that a child can have is poor comprehension skills. They may be reading but they are not able to fully understand what they have read despite their efforts. They may not however be able to express this and want to shy away from the task as it is deemed difficult.

If this is the case the parent or the teacher must ensure that they sit with the child and read with them. The child can be encouraged to repeat what is being said and also to try and explain what they are saying. Successful attempts must be rewarded. This will help to build their self confidence and encourage them to keep reading. Dictionaries can be introduced to help the child to look up words that they have difficulty understanding.

The main point to bear in mind is that the child must not be blamed for not reading. Once it is seen that there is a reading problem it must be addressed with care as the aim is to get them to keep trying while the problem is being corrected.

The Benefits Of Learning Phonics For Young Children

Oct 21

The teaching of phonics is commonplace in schools in many countries around the world. Whilst there are alternative methods for teaching children to read and write, phonics is widely regarded as being one of the most effective. As a teaching method it is thought to provide many benefits to children who are just beginning to understand how sounds are associated with individual letters, groups of letters, and full words.

The teaching of phonics is very effective at raising a child’s phonemic awareness. Every word is made up of individual components which can be sounded out. These are known as phonemes, and they represent the very essence of how phonics education works. Phonics allows children to hear phonemes, identify them, and understand how the sounds and their associated letters correlate with one another.

What Is Phonics?

Oct 14

Language is constructed from a combination of various sounds, known as phonemes. These sounds represents building blocks which are used to form words, and as such each is easily decipherable and understood by humans. Phonics is a method of teaching language which correlates these individual sounds to letters, both individually and in groups.

Phonics has proven to be a very effective method of teaching young children to read and write. It is thought that by teaching children how to decode words by breaking them down they have a fuller understanding of language as they grow older. In order for children to be able to understand the connections between specific sounds and the letters they represent they must be taught the basic rules of phonics.
